Spotted wing drosophila is a pest of soft and stone fruits like strawberries, blackberries, plums, peaches and cherries. Although it is native to Eastern Asia, since 2008 it has spread throughout North America and Europe.

What kind of crop does it damage?
Soft and stone fruits like strawberries, blackberries, plums, peaches, cherries and more.

How does it damage them?
Larvae feed on the pulp, causing the fruit to collapse and exposing it to attack from other pathogens, causing rotting.

Where is it found?
Native to Eastern Asia but since 2008 it has spread throughout North America, Continental Europe and the UK.

What are the economic costs?
Economic costs are high: one recent study found that between 2009 and 2014, the insect cost $36.4 million – just for the California raspberry industry.
