Oxitec People: Deka Hassan Hersi, Field Scientist, Djibouti
Can you tell us about your role at Oxitec and what it entails?
As a field scientist, I oversee our mosquito colony, focusing on understanding Anopheles stephensi, the main malaria vector in Djibouti. My role involves managing the transgenic strain and ensuring project delivery and success through consistent monitoring and clear communication.
What motivated you to join Oxitec’s mission?
My journey into science started with a project on the chikungunya virus, where I explored its biology and transmission, to find ways to combat it. This experience inspired me to join Oxitec, where I'm dedicated to developing safe and innovative solutions to fight malaria in Djibouti, my home country.
What do you enjoy about your role?
What I love most about my job is the ongoing opportunity to learn and refine our mosquito rearing methods, adjusting them to fit Djibouti's environment. I also enjoy sharing our Friendly™ mosquito program with local communities, gaining their support for a malaria-free future through our innovative approach.
What advice would you give to others wanting to pursue your area of work?
My advice to aspiring professionals in this field is to prioritize hands-on experience and maintain persistence when facing complex challenges.
