JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Interim Accountant

Reporting to: Management Accountant

Responsible for: Implementing Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Compliance __________________________________________

Purpose of the job

Oxitec is a pioneer in controlling insects that spread disease and damage crops. Through world class science it is tackling the major global challenges of keeping people healthy and increasing food production and it is doing so in a way that is sustainable, environmentally friendly and cost effective. 

Over the next five years, the focus at Oxitec will be bringing existing products to market and the priority is to generate profitable revenues.

We are looking for an accountant who is fully conversant with financial processes to be able to assist the existing team in the implementation of SOX Section 404.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills along with a methodical approach to understanding processes.  The responsibilities of the role are to include:

  • Integrating within the Finance team to understand their roles
  • Liaising with EY, our leader in the project
  • Liaising with Intrexon Corporation, our parent company
  • Interviewing and discussing with the team and wider company around processes
  • Documenting in agreed formats, those processes
  • Investigating and recommending improvements that ensure we are compliant with s404 and related matters such as segregation of duties and effective financial review

Key Skills and Qualifications

At least part qualified finalist level of a recognised UK accounting body.  General awareness of accounting systems and reasonable level of skill with MS Excel and Word.

Benefits

The role is expected to be a six-month fixed term contract with salary commensurate with experience.  In addition we provide a generous pension and 25 days annual leave pro rata.

Job Title: Senior Research Scientist (Fixed term-24 months)

Reporting to:  R&D Group Leader

Responsible for:  Research and Development

Purpose of the job

Oxitec is a pioneer in controlling insects that spread disease and damage crops. Through world class science it is tackling the major global challenges of keeping people healthy and increasing food production and it is doing so in a way that is sustainable, environmentally friendly and cost effective. 

We are seeking a highly motivated senior insect research scientist to be part of a UK team dedicated to the development of our self-limiting technology in an insect species that causes crop damage. This position involves laboratory analysis of insect strains before they are rolled out for regulatory approved field application.

This is a great opportunity to work for a pioneering biotech company. The contract is fixed-term for 24 months, with the possibility of extension pending further funding. The successful candidate will be educated to PhD level (or BSc/MSc with equivalent experience) in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline. Experience in insect biology, especially in working with Drosophila, and understanding of molecular biology, are highly desirable. The successful candidate will be able to work independently while maintaining a strong team ethos, demonstrate good laboratory practices and the ability to follow SOPs, and have excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this role are:

  • Characterisation of genetically engineered insect strains and selection of potential product candidates
  • Developing a pathway towards the first glasshouse trials/field trials.
  • Contributing to the assembly of reports for IP and regulatory submission.
  • Delivering work in accordance with project objectives and milestones.
  • Liaising with other teams to deliver technical advances in a timely and consistent way.
  • Analysing, reporting, and communicating data to project and R&D management team.
  • Assisting with other projects where required.

Key Skills and Qualifications

  • PhD in Biological Science or a related scientific discipline (or BSc/MSc with equivalent experience).
  • Experience of working with insects, especially Drosophila, would be highly desirable.
  • Experience in application of molecular techniques (qPCR, expression profiling).
  • Must be diligent and organised.
  • Have a creative approach to problem solving and the development of applied solutions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team.

Job Title: Research Scientist

Reporting to: Product Development Group Leader

Responsible for: Development of insect strains

Purpose of the job

Oxitec is a pioneer in controlling insects that spread disease and damage crops. Through world-class science, we are tackling the major global challenges of keeping people healthy and increasing food production in a sustainable, environmentally friendly and cost-effective way. 

Over the next five years, the focus at Oxitec will be on bringing existing products to market and our first priority is to generate profitable revenues.

We are looking for an insect scientist to develop and characterise new strains of key agricultural pests. You will be involved from strain generation to strain characterisation in the laboratory and processing towards field trial-readiness. Entomological experience will be highly valued.

Responsibilities

As an insect scientist you will be responsible for the day to day management and optimisation of GM insect strains and related methods. You will be directly involved with agricultural pest insects and in liaising with other teams to deliver technical advances in a timely and consistent way. Areas requiring active inquiry will include insect biology, genetics, and some molecular biology. Specific day-to-day tasks will include:

  • Developing methods for insect transformation and laboratory rearing
  • Maintaining insect strains, including diet preparation
  • Conducting laboratory experiments to test properties of transformed insect strains
  • Complying with regulatory obligations, legal requirements and professional standards
  • Collecting, evaluating and reporting experimental data

Key Experience

  • BSc in relevant field, with entomology experience strongly preferred
  • Creative approach to application and process development expected
  • Data handling and statistical analysis are desirable
  • Successful candidates will have strong leadership and organisational skills and attention to detail in addition to being independent and self-motivated
  • Good spoken and written communication in English
